The Writers Tag was created by Lorraine Ambers and Ari Meghlen for writers to connect with each other and help expand our writing community. To participate, we answer 12 tag questions and are encouraged to tag other writers. So, here we go:
Name one novel which inspired me to write. It wasn’t a novel. It was an experience I had supporting a friend at a comedy club. I was so out of place in the audience of a sea of twentysomethings I felt old. It didn’t help matters that the warmup comedian spotted me and called me ‘Pops.’ I wrote a short funny story about it on Watt Pad and realized that I liked writing things that people could read.
What’s your favorite genre to read and write? I believe its science fiction. I love the concept of world building. That said, I also like horror. Creepy things in the night attacking the unsuspecting keeps me awake…and reading.
Do you prefer to write stand-alone or series? Id say stand alone so I can move on to another idea immediately. I have so many ideas and so little time.
Use three words to describe yourself: Introvert, Workaholic, Empathetic
Reveal your WIP aesthetics or an image that represents your main character or setting. I have yet to understand why someone who knows me for several years can make the mistake of mispronouncing my name at times. Most common is Donneil. My current WIP flash fiction has an antagonist that becomes murderous when his name is spoken incorrectly. Well, they do say ‘write what you know.‘

Who is your author idol? Octavia Estelle Butler. Through community college and workshops she began writing science fiction. She went on to receive multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards for her creativity.
Share a writing memory that made you determined to carry on. My new naive writing passion caused me to share a 1st draft novella to a seasoned writing group. They tore through it like locusts during one of the Plagues of Egypt. To carry on, I realized that I had to learn the basic rules of writing (before breaking them) and keep 1st drafts of anything at home.
Tell us something surprising or unique about yourself. I love the feeling I get when I teach someone how to use an IOT device (anything used on the internet) It reminds me I missed my calling in life, to be a school teacher. Young minds need more people that care.
Share the hardest part about being a writer and how you overcame it. I battle keeping the confidence to write. Its still an issue but I get encouragement from reading about other writers struggles and what they do to overcome it. And I comment on their blogs. It’s nice to know that someone took a minute to let you know they read your work.

Great to find out more about you. What an unusual reason for learning to write. I have looked over some of my old stuff. Sometimes the idea can be good even if the execution need a lot of work.

Awesome reading your answers. I too like Octavia Butler. How psyched was I to know there was a Black female sci-fi writer! Unfortunately, I’m still reading Lillith’s (Xenogenesis) journey with the wiggly people and that was over a year ago. So detailed.

Thanks for participating, Darnell! I enjoyed your answers. I can relate to the ‘finding your calling late in life’ idea. I finally figured out my true passions in my late 40’s. Well, it’s never too late until your dead… I think somebody famous said that. And kudos to you for taking an uncomfortable situation and using it as source material for fiction. I swear that sort of thing is therapeutic! I hope you finish those three manuscripts and I wish you the very best of luck with publishing! Thanks again ~ Meg
