Diary of a bad writer – Week 33

Diary of a bad writer banner

I’ve finished writing my next story. Something seems off. Is it simply the title or maybe the dialog? I’ll hold onto it until I figure out what needs to be corrected. Why? I only post when I feel good about the work. This is my creative process.

You are such a good writer. I compose my blog posts rapidly and without a great deal of editing. I think of it as fresh and raw! Someday I will go back to clean it up and make it more professional. I hope my words are cringe-worthy.

Fresh and Raw works for me. You must be in the moment with Callie. 😎

May you just need some distance from it for a little while? Try putting it away, working on something else and then going back to it with fresh eyes.

I agree. I spent the weekend away from writing. Will start fresh again this week . Thank you for the advice.🤗

I think this kind of process is important to have- otherwise, you may be producing tons of content that doesn’t reach its potential. You’re a magnificent writer and I’m so glad that you take so much time with your work (though I’m eager to read more) because it shows us readers that you value the quality over quantity. Your work has proved time and time again that your creative process works, so I’m glad you have stuck to it. Can’t wait to read what you’re working on!

I don’t think I’d want to share something until I was happy with it either. Hopefully a little break away from it will help so when you go back to it you’ll be able to spot what you don’t think feels quite right 🙂

I find that Elizabeth Gilbert quotation confusing. Your caring about the results is part of your creative process. I think it is for all of us; they’re inextricably linked. Otherwise we’d all have those French novels of years ago in which you’d throw the pages into the air, and whatever landed was considered the finished work.

    What am I missing?

I think if I believe in my creative process, a good story will follow. When I write but feel something is off, I go back to check my process. That was the thing I took from her quote. Any more thought on it would be as you described, throwing pages in the air…
You didn’t miss anything. Ms. Gilbert’s concepts are unusual to say the least.
Thank you for the feedback Annie.

I’m jealous, really. I’m having trouble starting a novel because I don’t know which story idea means the most to me right now.

I go through that all the time. Idea #1 is good, and makes you smile. Idea #2 makes your heart feel warm and cozy. Pick #2 and start writing. 🤗

It always helps me to set things aside for a few weeks(months) and return to it. It always looks different and sometimes like someone else wrote it. 😂

True! That happened to me. I looked at an old story and realized a had made a lot of good changes I forgot about. 😊

Now this is something I want to check out when you’ve published it.
It will be very interesting to see a fresh take on a sturdy genre…..but please,no vampires, zombies or werewolves……
