Diary of a bad writer – Week 58

Diary of a bad writer banner

November 19th, before bed – I was thinking about my teen protagonist. He contemplated suicide as the answer to a problem. Some followers that read the story wanted to know why he came to that conclusion. The reason in my head was teen angst, but a clear answer should have been in the story.    Live, Learn, & Write it Better.

Suicide is easier to fathom for some than others, no matter how much you try to convince them. But it’s good that you are taking their feedback and making your story better.

True. Some people have complained on podcasts I listen to about a book or movie scene the author or director had a idea for but the audience didn’t get it. Telling people later what the scene was about is bad writing. I hope to convey my ideas in a way everyone understands. Thanks for the feedback Goldie.🤗

I agree on both aspects – the audience should be able to fathom what’s going on from the writing, but the reasoning behind suicide often isn’t clear (ie. with a distinct ‘reason’) in real life, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it weren’t clear in a piece of prose as that’s the nature of suicide. I do get what you mean though. How could you have conveyed teenage angst being the driving force behind what he was contemplating? Through something he says to something, from something he writes? Having thought about it, I think it would be quite challenging to portray teenage angst in this situation as you can’t really have the character saying “argh, all this teenage angst makes me want to end it all”. Tricky one! It’s brilliant you’re using the feedback to inform and develop your writing each time. xx

Thanks Caz. I’m learning partly from constructive criticism and reading other author’s work. I’m finding it takes a village to make a good writer.🤗
