Diary of a bad writer – Week 37

Diary of a bad writer banner

I was told in comments that my last story had good descriptions. They were okay, but my goal is to make a story come alive in the reader’s mind. I want them to imagine they are on the page with my characters. That can only be accomplished if I keep writing, and learning.

Ha! Well said. I’m working on that myself. It feels strange to be entering a world that is not mine, but I understand that I need to make it mine and to feel what the characters feel so that the reader can, too.

Your newest stories reflect that you are doing it, which will get better as you become comfortable in those worlds.

Some of my favourite authors are those that breathe life into their characters and make them three dimensional, so you come to love them and really want to keep reading because you become invested in them. I think this is often achieved best through longer writing, so during the course of a novel, so your skills will shine through when you get that book written 😉

With all due respect to Stephen King (I enjoyed his “On Writing”), including sensory input is an important part of imaginative work that can’t be fobbed off on readers, for them to complete a description or other fictional experience on their own. When I was analyzing how I had written my first novel, I was surprised at how often one or more of the five senses appeared in descriptive passages (I planned nothing about the book). I think this is why a reader told me she felt she was “walking alongside” one of my characters.

Where do you publish your books? What types of stories do you write?

None of my work has been published, yet. I like Sy Fy mostly but my fiction touches a lot of genres. 🙂

Look forward to seeing more of what you share. I’ve been binge listening to “last seen wearing”. Best performance off an audio book ever

Johnzelle, a story that I wrote last year was published last month. I mention it in my post “3rd Blogger Award.” Check out the magazine and the story! Since it was my first published piece, I thought you’d like to know!

That is such a good quotation—for creative non-fiction as well as fiction.

The cheetah and I both felt we were in the world of “What’s My Name?”….so much so we’re sort of chomping at the bit for a return visit….
