Diary of a bad writer – Week 41

Over the weekend – Received positive comments on latest fiction. A reader provided a perspective I hadn’t considered that would have made the story better. This helped me see the usefulness of having a beta reader for my work in progress.

Honest Feedback Is Invaluable

Honest, unbiased, and constructive feedback is truly invaluable to an author. Sometimes it’s easy to be too close to a story, so allowing someone else to take it in and mull it over for themselves can give you wonderful new insights to consider. I’ve finally committed to my own work in progress and only have about 14,000 words so far but am already thinking of beta readers. I think they can be beneficial even during the first drafting process as they can help writers see what’s missing or how an idea should come together differently, etc.

I’d rather have my beta readers point out flaws then a reviewer. They really can be helpful.

Completely agree! I have sometimes found that books that are self published have great story lines, characters, etc. but are missing some degree of editing that could really improve the book as a whole. I personally enjoy beta reading more than reviewing, because as a beta reader, I can use my feedback to make a difference! Once you’re reviewing a book, it’s likely already published, and changes can’t be made.

With all of that being said, when you get to the stage of needing beta readers, I’d love to be one for you if you’re interested! ☺

That’s great – I think feedback and another perspective can be brilliant at giving us new ideas or improving what we’ve already got. Hope you have a lovely weekend, mr! 🙂

It’s one of the most important steps to becoming a good writer I think – learning to accept criticism graciously, and to listen to it. Not easy though.
