Past Meets Present

My writing group came up with this photo for a writing prompt. “Create a short story about a dinosaur holding an American flag and holding onto a Palm tree along the side of the road.” Here is what I came up with:

At the corner of a busy street, there was a sight unlike any other. A dinosaur with painted scales, standing in broad daylight, held an American flag in its tiny forelimbs. The forelimbs, only 3 feet long, held a 15-foot flag with two clawed fingers. Despite its massive height of 40 feet, cars drove by. Humans didn’t take pictures or upload videos to TikTok. People were seemingly unfazed by the prehistoric creature in their midst. The dinosaur stood beside a towering palm tree, with leaves vibrant green. A few fell on the head of the T-Rex, much more fell to the ground as the dinosaur bumped the tree with 15 thousand pounds of pressure.

The bump caused the American flag to wave softly in the breeze, creating a symbol of patriotism in this unusual scene. The difference between the ancient creature and the modern setting was evident. It was a rare moment of peaceful coexistence, a blend of the past and the present. The dinosaur, with its powerful jaws and strong muscles, seemed to be the guardian of the street corner, an observer of human hustle and bustle. The overcast sky produced gray light on the scene, like a silvery spotlight highlighting every detail of the dinosaur, flag, and tree. This was a picture of harmony, a reminder that even if we are different, we can live, love, and share the same space.

Aww, what a sweet story, Darnell. And also the evidence shows that sometimes everything is happy – just for a while. Good one!
