March 3rd, 8:00pm – I remember my last bout with writer’s block. I was penning a post-apocalyptic story about aliens and a “safe room” that burrows in the ground. I got about 10 – 12k words written before I put it on the shelf. It’s bad, but I’ll keep working on it from time to time. I expect it to get better during editing one day.
Hey! Were Writers! – Keep Writing
Bring that out of the closet – good luck my friend ๐

Pullman takes a different approach to some when it comes to writers block. It’s like there’s a camp that says you can’t force the spark, so go do something else and wait and rekindle the creativity. Then another camp that says just keep writing, keep pushing through anyway. Tricky one.
I hope you can keep chipping away at the safe room story, Darnell. Just bits here and there maybe when you feel inspired to add to it. xx

I appreciate the encouragement Caz ๐For that storyline, I’ll have to side with camp a, don’t force the spark, but keep it on the burner. (see what I did there?) Thanks for your insight. Have a wonderful weekend.

Absolutely, you want to let it simmer ๐

Sometimes I just open up the story and say “I’ll just write one sentence.”…it always works ๐. Hemingway said that…I’m just paraphrasing…

I’ll have to try that! Thanks for the suggestion Tina. ๐ค

I think that having a work on the shelf is a good way to break yoiur block plus allow you to experiment with new plots or characters.

Very true. I clear my head to work on another plot ๐

Great attitude to just keep chipping away at it even though you’re not feeling that particular story – it’s so hard to keep that mindset. I’m sure one day it will just click and turn out great!

Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy the story. I’m sure your readers will, too.

Good point! Enjoy whatever you write. I’ll have to use that for my next write encouragement. Golden words. ๐ค

I like that sequence of thinking: โItโs bad…Iโll keep working at it…I expect it will get better.โ
And it will!
